Fleas, cluster flies & insect pest control Hereford & Mid Wales
insect pests
including clusterflies & fleas
Surepest are regularly called upon to treat ants, flies, fleas, carpet beetles, cockroaches and more. Because of their reproductive rate, an infestation of any insect pest can be overwhelming, so a quick response is essential.
One of the most disturbing insect pests to invade a home are Clusterflies, simply because they appear suddenly. . . and in huge numbers. Fortunately, cluster flies are easy to treat, whilst they are in a single large mass, during their dormant phase.

Surepest are also receiving calls from across the three counties of house flies that bite! All of the common species of fly are incapable of biting. . . they simply do not have the mouthparts. What is causing this annoying problem is the Stable Fly, described in the bonus content below.
In the case of any infestation of insects, identification is all important so that Surepest can determine the appropriate treatment. If you are unsure what pests are causing your problem, email a photo of the insect (dead or alive) to; cliff@surepest.uk and Cliff will identify the pest species for you, without obligation!
BONUS: More common insect pests. . .The types of insects that cause problems in domestic circumstances are normally flies, fleas, bed bugs and cockroaches. This is not an exhaustive list, but covers insect pests normally found around Herefordshire, Mid Wales and the West Midlands... but all are treatable!
Clusterflies: Cluster flies are pests that may infest homes in huge numbers, lying dormant in lofts, attics, or dark corners before emerging en mass. They fly slower than regular houseflies and leave behind greasy spots or dark excrement on walls and window.
Carpet Beetles: Carpet beetles are small, oval-shaped insects that can cause severe damage to bedding, clothes, carpets and upholstered furniture if left unattended. It is the larvae of the Carpet Beetle (called 'Woolly Bears') that cause damage and eat holes in fabric items, thin or bare areas on wool rugs, damage to blankets and shed larval skins in hidden areas.
Stable flies: Almost indistinguishable from the common housefly to the naked eye, the Stable Fly (also known as the Barn or Dog Fly), unlike most members of the family Muscidae, are blood feeders. Now found worldwide, the species is considered to be of Eurasian origin and is spreading as a direct consequence of our warming climate.
Cockroaches: Cockroaches pose a direct health risk to humans. As known vectors of disease, cockroaches carry the organisms which cause food poisoning in humans and many other bacteria, such as salmonella, staphylococcus and streptococcus as they move from sewers, drains into buildings and human habitats.
The two most common cockroach species in the UK are the German and Oriental cockroach. The adult German cockroach is between 10 to 15mm long and is a yellowy brown colour, the adult Oriental cockroach is larger in size and is dark brown/black in colour. Normally found inside houses because they are unable to cope with the British weather very well...
Fleas: Although cat and dog fleas are a common problem in homes with pets (or where previous occupants have kept animals), human fleas are rarer in the UK, but the recent warmer climate is increasing their prevelance. Fortunately, all flea species can be effectively eliminated cheaply and effectively using the correct products.
It is important to remember that regular hoovering will remove some flea eggs but you will never remove all. Always empty your vacuum cleaner outside into a plastic bag and tie it securely. Normally one treatment with an industrial insecticide, sprayed throughout the house is sufficient.
One of the first signs that you may have a flea problem is your cat or dog scratching, you may also have areas on the lower legs that are itching as a result of being bitten. If this is the case, your pet needs to be treated with a proprietary brand of flea treatment regularly throughout the summer to prevent re-infestation.
Bed Bugs: Easily the most distressing of pests to discover in your home... bed bugs are becoming an increasingly common problem in Hereford and West Midlands.
Bed bugs are often unwanted travelling companions, hiding in the bottom of your suitcase and emerging after you have returned from your foreign holiday. They are attracted to carbon dioxide and warmth which is why most bed bug bites occur on and around the neck area at night while you are asleep. Bed Bugs prefer dark areas and is why they are more active at night... but it is not uncommon to disturb them from their dark hiding places during the day and see them scurrying for the nearest darkest recess they can find.

treatment options
The professional pesticides used by Surepest for flies, ants and carpet beetles, whilst powerful enough to effectively kill small insects, are applied at very low concentrations, so they pose little or no health threat to people or pets. Cliff will always advise on the day, but the best strategy is to keep pets away from any treated surface until they are completely dry. . . approximately 1 to 2 hours.
