Urban fox control for gardens & allotments, Hereford & West Midlands

urban foxes

neighbours from hell

Over recent decades, foxes have become a common sight in towns and cities across the UK as they self-domesticate and move in to share our urban environment. . .  where they are often fed by residents.

Although a danger to domestic pets, foxes are unlikely to attack adult humans (unless the fox is cornered or attempts are made to tame or manhandle the animal), there are increasingly frequent reports from across Britain of urban foxes biting children and babies.

Foxes, including those that have taken up residence in urban areas, are protected by law (with a potential fine of £5,000 for breaches) and so you must not block any dens that you find, or attempt to address the problem yourself by using traps, snares or poison!  If urban foxes are becoming a problem for you, call Cliff Howard at Surepest for his expert advice.

BONUS:
  The lifestyle of urban foxes

It is far easier to deter urban foxes than to trap and remove them once they have become established and there are several steps you can take to dissuade City Foxes from taking up residence in your urban garden or allotment;

Remove food sources!  For foxes, 'food' is a very broad church and you may have to remove items such as bird feeders, livestock (chickens and rabbits), bin storage, berries and windfall fruit.  Domestic rubbish (especially if it contains food waste), should be well sealed and secured.

Remove sources of water:  Foxes prefer gardens that have a reliable supply of water, such as a pond, decorative water feature, a leaking water pipe or garden hose.  Covering a pond with mesh, turning off your water feature (at least at night) and removing access to water pipes will all help to make your property attractive to Urban Foxes.

Protect pets & livestock:  Many urban home owners keep domesticated rabbits, guinea pigs, pigeons and chickens in outdoor hutches or enclosures.  It goes without saying that these should be thoroughly fox-proofed with weld mesh, not chicken wire (which foxes can easily break), and any food bins securely closed and inaccessible to urban foxes.

Urban or City Foxes are also attracted to gardens with soft soil, especially flower beds, which are ideal for fox cubs to practice digging!  Fox cubs remain dependent on their mother until around three months old and are tutored by her thoughout, so you should fox-proof flower beds using a professional mesh.

City or town foxes like messy, overgrown, gardens with unkempt shrubbery and bushes for cover, so keeping a tidy garden is probably the easiest way to deter urban foxes!

Will urban or city foxes kill larger animals?  Yes, very occasionally foxes will tackle and injure animals as large as swans and ducks on park lakes, small animals in city farms or even zoos.

Do town foxes dig up buried pets?  Sadly, this is very difficult to prevent and obviously distressing if it's a child's pet.  To a fox, it is simply a easy source of food and however deep you bury your pet it will invariably be dug up, with the fox re-excavating the hole, even after it has taken away the remains.

Can Surepest stop town foxes digging up my lawn?  Again, this is not always easy to do.  There are, however, scent-based repellents available to professional pest controllers. . .  ask Surepest's Cliff Howard for advice.

treatment options

Each local authority will have its own restrictions and regulations, which leaves live trapping and removal as the most common fox control option for Surepest.

Urban foxes can be incredibly crafty and 'street smart', having lived amongst humans for so long, which makes them particularly challenging to control or trap.

Live trapping of City or Urban foxes requires specialist traps and should only be attempted by a professional pest controller like Surepest in Hereford with the correct licenses and knowledge of the law.
