rats & mice

avoid a rodent explosion

If left unchecked, just one breeding pair of rats are potentially capable of producing 2,000 descendants every year!

Over 12 months, each rat will shed more than half a million body hairs and can leave 25,000 droppings, contributing to secondary infestations of parasites like fleas, lice and ticks.  Rodent damage is also frequently identified as the source of fires, caused by them gnawing through electric cabling. . .  and are often responsible for the loss of internet connection!

Because rats and mice are most active between dusk and dawn, it's far more common to spot signs of the problem, rather than the animals themselves.

BONUS:  Signs of a rodent infestation

Lofts and attics present an ideal environment for rodents, so inspect the roof space for visible signs of habitation, most commonly, their droppings or gnaw damage.  Because noise is often the first indication of a rat or mouse infestation, any tell-tale sounds (especially at night) should be investigated immediately.

Both rats and mice are known to spread disease as they search for food and shelter, posing significant health risks. . .  particularly in kitchens or food storage areas.

The constant gnawing habit of rodents means they can also cause damage to your property, furnishings and equipment... especially electrical and data cables!  Simple measures like pest proofing your premises can help to protect you.

Signs of rat or mouse infestation:  Scratching noises at night or an unusual, ammonia like smell, are often the first indication that you may have rats or mice in your property.  Both species are predominantly nocturnal and can remain hidden for a long time before you even begin to suspect a problem, so if you find signs of rodent activity, Surepest are able to confirm the presence of these pests and offer a safe, targeted and cost effective treatment.

Mice are agile and are inquisitive creatures, able to use their flexible skeletons to squeeze into the tiniest spaces, so you need to be pragmatic and check a building for mice from the very top to the bottom, inside and out... including;

Lofts, attics & eaves:  Rats and mice will shred soft materials like loft insulation, paper, cardboard and fabrics in order to line their nests.  Also check for scattered droppings and an ammonia like smell, which can be quite strong in a confined space.

Kitchens & laundries:  Check behind appliances, as these pests can squeeze into gaps behind a fridge freezer or under the base of a cooker.  Any areas where pipework or cabling enters through outside walls offers a chance to sneak in, so check behind the washing machine too.

Basements & cellars:  Mice especially can gain entry to lower floors through air bricks and vents, particularly if they are damaged.

Cavity walls:  other hidden spaces such as suspended ceilings, crawlspaces and even understair and airing cupboards, as these places are secure and protected environments for mice and rats.

Sheds & garages:  Check the base of wooden doors for gaps and gnaw marks.  If you have an integral garage check around the internal door and any vents that could give entry into your property.  Note; field mice are more likely to enter sheds and outbuildings in search of stored foods, preferably fruits and vegetables.

Compost bins:  Compost heaps attract rats and mice because they are warm and contain food.  Check the base of composters for holes or gnaw marks and never dispose of cooked food waste in compost!

Vegetation:  Ovegrown vegetation close to walls may be used as cover by rodents.  Vines, shrubs and overhanging branches close to a property give rats and mice a climbing frame from which to reach entry points in the eaves or on the roof.

Some other common signs of rat or mouse activity:
Droppings.  Both pests leave up to 100 droppings a night, small and dark, about 3 - 8 mm in length for mice, double that size in the case of rats, scattered randomly. . .  (remember to check inside or on cupboard tops or along skirting).
Grease marks caused by their bodies brushing against walls, floors and skirting on regular routes, dark smears around holes or around corners.
Urine pillars.  In established or heavy infestations the pest's body grease, combined with dirt and urine, builds up into small mounds. . .&mnsp; which can be up to 4cm high and 1cm wide!
Spoor.  Dusty environments can show up rodent tracks and tail drag marks.
Live or dead mice.  Spotting a rat or mouse during the daytime can indicate a heavy infestation.

It's a misconception that mice are only a winter problem, house mice are active all year round!
