Wildlife husbandry - deer herd & wild boar culling Forest of Dean, Mid Wales
herd husbandry
deer population control
While deer management usually means culling to a plan which is designed to replicate a similar impact to that of natural predation, deer husbandry is far more than just culling and takes into account a number of factors and methods to ensure deer populations remain healthy and in balance with their environment.
It is a crucially important part of herd management to identify the husbandry factors that will minimise the occurrence of infectious or parasitic diseases.
BONUS: Close seasons for deer cullingIn order to protect female deer and their young (and male deer while their antlers are growing), the UK operates a close season system in both England and Wales that specifies when the culling of different species may NOT take place. Please note that these dates are different in Scotland.

A herd of one hundred roe deer, for example, allowing for known birth and mortality rates can increase their numbers to over a thousand in just ten years. . . if left uncontrolled.

wild boar & pigs
Wild boar and feral pigs are likely to be managed by shooting, trapping, or exclusion by fencing. They pose very little threat to humans as long as they are not unduly disturbed; during the breeding season any sow with piglets should be given a wide berth.
Because wild boar can produce young throughout most of the year, with no obvious breeding season, there is no closed season for culling.
